Long ago when he sailed wooden schooners, Captain Percy
survived the great storm of 1926 that broke the main boom
and spars of his vessel.
One of his great memories is lying in fog in a calm sea
south of Greenland, when a seaplane taxied up. It was Charles
Lindbergh and his wife on their way to Europe, lost in the
fog and asking for bearings.
Captain Percy celebrated his 93rd birthday by going for
a long paddle in his Sea Hawk. He pronounced the kayak sea-kindly,
very economical of labor and stiff in the wind: tracking
in a straight direction.
